Unix for the masses

May 28th, 2009 (08:43 pm)
discontent

current mood: discontent

Thanks to Apple, millions of people are walking around with Unix machines in their pockets.1

...and don't know it. They don't have a command line, they don't have an X server, they can't run applications in background—they can't even get applications installed without Apple's say-so. It's Unix, but it's stripped of almost everything that makes Unix good.

Sigh.

1. The iPhone and the iPod Touch run MacOS X, which is Unix-based.

Ah, but on the train ride home, on my iPod Touch I solved a crossword puzzle and watched the second half of a Batman movie. Take that, command line.*

* I love Unix, don't get me wrong. It's the best development environment. But I love my iPod more.

Hey, I watch my movies from the command line. I could even have the video show up in the xterm, with "mplayer -vo aa" (ASCII art).

But can you do it on a train?

(Or in a boat? With a goat?)

Well, yes

Yes, I can, with my N810. And I can hack on it, too, in, let's see...C, C++, Scheme, Common Lisp, Python, Prolog, SML, Haskell, OCaml, Smalltalk, Forth. Oh, and JavaScript and Emacs Lisp, of course.

I'm sure many people have made the observation that it is amusing that the homophone of eunuchs has been "rendered impotent or deprived of vitality."

...no, as far as I know, you're the first. Most people stop at the "Eunuchs programmers" jokes.

Twitch.
