A computer worth waiting for

August 25th, 2004 (10:40 am)

When I started my new job on Monday, they didn't have a computer ready for me (they ordered it FedEx, but it was delayed somehow). This morning I came in and found it on my desk, and wow. 2G RAM, 4 CPUs (Xeon, 2.8GHz)...<dig, dig>...and they have the AMD 64-bit extensions.

They told me when I interviewed that they gave us fast machines, but I never expected this. :-)

Edit: Turns out it's only 2 CPUs, but with hyperthreading. And I'm probably not going to get to use the amd64 stuff; too much to worry about in the way of compatibility problems.

Congratulations

Hey congratulations on the new gig. Just stumbled upon this, and to be honest, reading some of the content of your journals, and their computer based content, and I really feel like it might as well be written in Chinese, or Lebanese, or "look at these". But that is because I am a computer ignoramus. An ignoramus in general, to be honest, but when it comes to computers, I am lucky if I can remember how to check my email (if that is what it is called...email...just to be clear, "email" is some kind of magical electronic messenging that is sent over the "internet" - which was a magical device created by Al Gore in the mid to late 1970's to communicate with his parents- at least, that is what I have been told). So anyway, congratulations. I know in this GW Bush economy, every job is to be held near and dear. Take it easy Johnny. And Sister Tranquilla sends her best. Just to update you on Tranquilla, she is now onto her fourth marriage, smoking way too much, and knocking out toe-headed kids faster than you can say "your library book is overdue, and now you are going to Hell".
