Who, me? [userpic]

October 15th, 2008 (07:39 am)
current location: Deep in the Uncanny Valley

The past week or two, North Station has been plastered with ads for this year's pro basketball video game. Everywhere you turn, you see huge photorealistic renditions of people whom I presume to be famous NBA players. The first one I really noticed was the banner over the escalators down to the T station: a group shot of maybe half a dozen players clustered together, staring out at us. It was disturbing, but it took me a while to figure out why.

It was the faces. The bodies are virtually perfect, with realistic proportions, musculature, etc.; but the faces are just plain dead. Not even blank, the way someone's face will go when they're thinking about something else, but dead. I compared them to a couple of the posters of real players around the place, and the difference was pretty stark. Some of the real players were looking fairly blank, but they were vibrant and vivacious compared to the zombies in the game ads. It's hard to believe that those ads will be successful at selling the game, instead of scaring people off.

Definitely. It didn't help that the pictures were somewhat larger than life (10-20% or so); the "zombies are coming to get me!" effect would've been less if they weren't giant zombies.

I guess you're not a big basketball fan, then.

(Or is it just zombie basketball you don't follow.?)

Definitely not

Definitely not. I don't follow any sports. So, yeah, I'm not exactly the target market for this game.
