Congress prepares to legalize warrantless searches

June 20th, 2008 (10:14 am)

The House of Representatives is preparing to vote, today, on a bill that will permit the government to perform searches—not just wiretaps, but physical searches, too—with no warrant. There's a provision that says the information can't be used unless a warrant is received, but even that has a loophole allowing the Attorney General to waive it.

This is part of the telecom immunity bill, the one blocking people from suing their phone companies for collaborating with the Bush Administration's illegal wiretaps. Even that is disgusting, but this bill is out-and-out tyranny.

It's H.R. 6304, and it's being rushed through—it wasn't until yesterday morning that anybody outside the House leadership got a chance to see the text. Call your Representative, explain that the bill is not just telecom immunity, and tell them to vote against it.

I *bet* it's been rushed through. Sneaky bastards.

I wish I'd seen this earlier in the day!
