Looking for a new job

May 29th, 2008 (03:31 pm)

For the past 6 months or so, I've been working on a startup. At this point, though, the funding still hasn't come through; the CEO says it'll be two more weeks, but he's been saying that for three months now. So, I'm looking for another job, one that can actually pay me. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm already working with a couple of recruiters.

I'm a high-grade programmer, a software architect. My experience is pretty varied; what I mostly look for is hard problems. Main constraint: I don't do Windows. (Well...not yet, anyway; I'm not desperate enough.) I've worked from very low levels (e.g., writing a microkernel in C) to very high (e.g., writing compilers and interpreters).

My résumé.

I'll toss your resumé in for my office if you don't mind. We're very local for you, and staffing up to build a new Redback platform. I work pretty close to hardware, but I think in general we're looking for more systems-type folks.

Anybody else reading this should feel encouraged to send a resumé my way too.

Yes, please!

Yes, please! That definitely sounds like it could be interesting.

What's the company name?

Re: Yes, please!

Um, sorry; I could have been more clear. We are actually part of Redback. Which is owned by Ericsson. Which we were part of before they bought Redback... It's a long story...

I'll send a note to my manager (who works from home on Fridays, so I won't see him until next week).

Re: Yes, please!

Ah—even more interesting; I thought you meant building a new platform on top of Redback's. Thanks again!

Some questions/notes:

Your text introduction doesn't mention the past two jobs.

Your HTML version at least, doesn't mention the startup.

And do you want your street address live on the web? Many people advise not to do that.

You're right, I need to take down the street address. The absence of the startup...not sure how that happened; I know I gave an updated version to my recruiters. I'll take care of it.

The cover letter, I definitely need to rework, even eliminate—at least one interviewer mistook it for the résumé proper.

And if you know of one recruiter who mistook it, there may be others.

Just checking: you have contact info for Sophia and Joanne? They're the two recruiters who have struck me as decent to work with. (I haven't actually gotten jobs through them, but I don't fault them for that: I'm explicitly not looking at this point.)

Main thing to keep in mind is that everyone still seems pretty hungry for high-level engineers, so don't fret. Get out into the market, and you should be able to find something good...

Sophia, yes; I don't think I know Joanne. But I'm also working with one or two others; I don't think I need another. Thanks, though!
