Everybody goes to Maine

July 16th, 2007 (03:52 pm)
current mood: geekery

Last week, we were on vacation in Maine. cvirtue wanted to take the kids to her great-aunt's ninety-somethingth birthday party on Sunday, so she and I drove up drove up separately, so I could get home on Saturday and have a day to recover before going back to work.

One hitch was that, at the time we left, I was still dealing with a nasty cold. Afraid of getting too sleepy while driving, I looked for something to keep my mind active. I settled on tracking license plates.

Naturally, this started out fairly dull. Plates from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, fine. Very soon, though, I was amazed to see plates from Texas and California—this was getting interesting. It was interesting enough that I kept watch throughout the week; by the time we got back, I had spotted plates from:

  • 39 states, including every state east of the Mississippi except Delaware: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, North Dakota, Montana, Arizona, Nevada, California, Washington, and Alaska.
  • Washington, DC.
  • Five provinces: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and British Columbia.
  • The US Air Force.
  • The US government. (Admittedly, this one was somewhat predictable, since we were in a national park at the time.)

Maybe next year the kids will be able to read well enough to play along.

We often do that on long drives (it's almost de rigeur for Pennsic). A good way to provide lots of little amusements as we go...

We were outside of Chicago this weekend, and we were amazed that we saw a Hawaii plate in our hotel parking lot.

Wow

Yeah, that trumps my Alaska. :-)

I think I've seen a Hawaii plate once in my life, but I don't remember for sure.
