Bizarre phone marketing

current mood: baffled

Just seen on Engadget: a Symbian ad with an octopus and some form of sushi roll mocking "Western smartphone users" (what, both of us?) for not having the advanced features Symbian phones have in Japan. Phones that act as ID cards, train tickets, credit cards, and, apparently, perfume dispensers. (I suppose I can see the logic here: if someone steals your ID/T-pass/wallet, you'll want them to be tagged with a personalized odor.)

It's a really bizarre cartoon; not sure if it's targeted at making Japanese customers want a smartphone, or making US customers demand advanced phones from our carriers (as if they listen to us). Oh, and you can download a 43-second ringtone, which appears to be made up mostly of 1960s Hanna-Barbera sound effects.

I still signed up for the "win a Symbian phone" raffle, though. :-)

Well, if you sign up for the raffle, you have to fill in the blank on "The yellow creature in the 'Boo-hoo for you!' animation is an:"--not "a:". Of course, it's entirely possible that the animator and the Webmaster have different ideas on what the creature is. ;-)
