Bring back the Independent Counsel statute

April 25th, 2007 (09:22 am)
current mood: grumpy

The Independent Counsel statute was created after Watergate, because Nixon fired the special prosecutor that was investigating him. After Kenneth Starr gave it a bad name by engaging in a partisan fishing expedition, the statute was not renewed.

So, once again, the responsibility of investigating the Executive Branch falls upon the Office of the Special Counsel, which is in the Executive Branch. This week, there was some news that made it seem as if the OSC would actually do its job, as its head, Scott Bloch, announced an investigation into Karl Rove's involvement in the political purge of US Attorneys.

Except now truthout points out that Bloch is himself under investigation (by the White House) for carrying out a political purge of the OSC.

Can we please get back to the fishing expeditions?
