Computer improvements

current mood: geeky

I had a couple of minor improvements in my computers last week. First, my desktop at work wouldn't turn on when I came in on Monday; turned out to be a bad power supply. The improvement came when IT found they didn't need to wait for the replacement; there was an identical machine available, so they did a drive transplant...whereupon I found out it wasn't identical after all; it was a slight step up from my older one, which was plenty nice already. This one has four gigs of RAM instead of two, and its CPUs are 3GHz instead of 2.8.

Second, in following the hooraw over Theo de Raadt's complaints about OLPC, I found a mention that the OLPC uses the Linux standard driver for SD cards. The what? I'd thought such things were impossible. Can I use it with the SD reader in my new laptop? <dig, dig>...OK, there is such a thing, but it doesn't work with my hardware...but here's a driver that does! Great. Built it, got it working, figured out how to have it mount the cards automatically when they're inserted...bingo, it Just Works.

Fun. :-)
