Can Karl buttons (etc.)

July 15th, 2005 (09:11 pm)

I've set up a CafePress shop with buttons and shirts saying "CAN KARL" (if you don't know why, see my previous entry).

There are a lot of different kinds of shirt in the shop, largely because CafePress has added a feature where you can say, "Add all these products with the same image". I suspect the option overload will be counterproducitve, but I didn't want to take the time to think through which shirts would be most suitable.

Two of the shirt styles come in pink, so I added the words "Hey, Karl, your pink slip is showing!" on the back.

Actually, I'm slightly of two minds on this scandal--outing Valerie Plame is small potatoes compared to lying the country into a war. But, really, it all ties together; Rove did it to distract attention from the lies. Bringing him down for it just might get people talking about the lies again.

Even if it doesn't, discrediting Rove would be good for the country; he's a vicious man, and an extremely effective political advisor. He's been Dubya's advisor for 10-15 years, but there's no reason to think he's going to retire after 2008. If he picks another protégé, he could be right back in the West Wing, continuing to wield Presidential power to crush anybody who annoys him. Even if we can't get him jailed, or even fired, turning him into a lightning rod could make it risky for anybody else to hire him.

Wordy Bumper Sticker Syndrome

I like that message, but I don't think it works as a bumper sticker. It suffers from Wordy Bumper Sticker Syndrome. The text is small enough that nobody'd be able to read it unless they were parked, or stuck behind it in slow traffic (in which case they're probably too irritated to be influenced by it :-).

That's why I kept mine to two words, in large type:

CAN KARL bumper sticker

CAN KARL button

Re: Wordy Bumper Sticker Syndrome

'Fraid I agree with Goldsquare. Not enough context. I'm not bothered by the forcefulness, but without knowing which Karl -- or knowing if it's short for "Can Karl win the Indy 500" it's not that useful.
