Earwax

current song: The rattle of the train

I love the way the world sounds right after I've had my ears cleaned out. It's not just the volume level; it's the overtones. When I've got wax in my ears, I can't hear the very high pitches, so everything seems duller. I don't necessarily notice it (until it gets bad enough that I start mishearing people); but getting the overtones back is like stepping out into sunlight.

Unfortunately, it doesn't last more than a day or few. Either it doesn't take much wax to block out this supernal hearing, or I just start filtering it. Next time I have this done, I should take the day off so I can enjoy it.

I think you simply adjust to the new volume levels.

Now, you've made another appointment for this same thing in X months, right?

I suppose I could. I generally just go in when it gets to be a problem.

I would expect this to follow a regular pattern, yes?

No, it's pretty irregular. Usually I can go 3-5 years; this last time was more like 6 months.

Have you been doing things you should not, like using qtips? I suggest scheduling the next one in 6 months. The idea is not to wait until you are nearly deaf!

Yeah, it was Q-tips that triggered this one. I thought I was being careful.

The Q-tips are now in hiding, so I won't see them and be, er, inspired.

How lucky you are. Most people's hearing losses cannot be cleared so easily.

Oh, I have no doubt I'll get to that point eventually.

I don't really feel lucky that I overproduce earwax (no, really :-), but I do feel lucky for a few hours after a cleaning.

TMI, I suppose

I, on the other hand, seem to produce none, and my ears often become quite itchy and dry. I actually put creams inside them for relief!

I suppose that must be what earwax is for?

I guess so. I could send you some of my excess if you want. ;-)
