Coke and the generation gap

current mood: codgery

Today I went to CVS for something, and got a bottle of Coke with it. The girl (*) at the checkout said, "Did you see that thing on the news where Coke is going to take the 'Classic' out of their name?"

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah! Won't that be weird?"

"Well, it was weird when they added it."

She looked taken aback. "Wait, when did they add it? It wasn't always like that?"

Sigh.

(* Probably college-age. Old enough that I would've called her a woman when I was her age, but I can't today.)

Yeah, I know. It's that borderline where people can do Adult Stuff, but probably shouldn't. Not that they shouldn't be allowed to, just that they'll hurt themselves doing it. (I know I did.) I can acknowledge that they have adult rights, but it's hard to treat them as full peers.

And, okay, part of it was her eyeshadow. She wasn't Tammy Faye Bakker, but she definitely looked like a teenager who needs to overdo it in order to ward off roving packs of peer pressers.

Some days, I am a Bad Person

"How many Wellesley girls does it take to change a light bulb?"

Slightly startling to realize that the rejoinder to that is still *completely* automatic, years after I last heard the joke...

My arbitrary dividing line

If you are old enough to be a parent to the man or woman, you are allowed to call them boy or girl.

Re: My arbitrary dividing line

Hmm. I get rather nettled when my mother refers to me as a "girl."
