Geek on the street

amused

current mood: amused

On my way to work Friday morning, I was reading the text for the operating systems class I'm taking this semester, and someone walking past stopped and said, "I know how to recognize a great hacker! I've got a startup, and we're hiring; are you looking, by any chance?"

Most amusing. Gratifying, too; I've gotten lots of feedback over the years for reading while walking, but this is the first time any of it has been positive feedback. :-)

(I said no, but gave him my card, and told him to send me email and I'd see if I knew anybody. I wound up sending him the résumé of someone I'd interviewed for Endeca--someone decent, just not what we wanted.)

Man. I wish our HR department worked like that...

Not the HR department

He wasn't an HR guy; he was a geek. (When I got the message from him, I Googled him and found some papers he'd written.)

And I kinda doubt he, or anybody, does this on a regular basis; the success rate would be too low. :-)
