My first Android app

November 22nd, 2010 (07:08 pm)

Today I published my first Android app to the Android Market. It's Fanorona, a traditional game, probably SCA-period, from Madagascar, played on a 9x5 board:

More details.

I'm trying to sell it for 99¢. No idea whether that will fly. One of my friends at work thinks I should make a free, ad-supported, version, too. Personally, for a game I want to play, I'd rather pay a buck than have to put up with ads.

I'm on the droid, and I don't even LOOK at what's available on the Pay side of the Market. That said, I just bought it. :) I'm more'n happy to give it a try.

Arrived from cvirtue's link. You just gave me a valid reason to buy a Droid, finally. Mind you I'll be buying a Droid tablet, then sneaky-installing the app store. But yeah! I'm going to see about buying every medieval board game there is. Merry Christmas, me!

Speaking of which, and I realize this is on the level of "jerk users being demanding well past the limits of good taste," but would you be willing to skin your app with "real" textures? I ask because, while a tablet's obviously not period (until I apply a wood-grain sticker, anyway), a surface that displays wood or cloth game backgrounds and stone or wood beads/pieces, is going to tickle the nerve clusters of Scadian's nerd and periodicity and clever disguise centers.

Great!

Which tablet are you looking at?

but would you be willing to skin your app with "real" textures?

Yeah, I'll take a look; it shouldn't be too hard.

Looking at an Archos 101 at the moment. I'm nervous about early adoption, but Droid 3.0's coming out in '11 and geared for tablets, so I'm willing to take the risk for a few hundred bucks.

I should tell you, then, that Fanorona is already available on Archos, via AppsLib. Personally, I'd prefer you buy it through the Market if you can, because AppsLib doesn't pay out until I reach $50 (which doesn't look likely; my total sales so far are $4).

Done:

The wood grain is a photo of our entertainment center; the blue and green gems are from flickr photos of a sapphire and an emerald.

Marvelous! Thanks. T-2 days until I buy it. Then shipping time, etc. 9_9
