The fallacy of youth is to treat all fads as trends; the fallacy of age is to ignore all trends as fads.

A bit on the follies of age - When I was an undergrad at UMass Amherst, I created a bit of a ruckus at the time by putting together a web site (one of the first by an undergrad on the public servers after an IT worker showed me how) listing the names and emails of the last few graduating classes of my HS class.

I advertized it on the local UMass and 5 College newsgroups and unbeknownst to me, a complaint was brought up to a group I was involved in (www Working Group) that I was using Univ. resources for non- educational use. They brought in some folks from the group to represent me, The dir of Network Computing and Vice Chancellor of IT represented the complaint in front of the Deputy Chancellor and Provost.

In that meeting, said IT reps said "The Web is a fad; it will come and go as fast as gopher."

I wrote them an acknolwdgement 5 years later in a book I co-authored on XML - Moving toward XHTML thanking the for the sentiment which spurred me on throughout the years.
